Brodie Ray did so after police found him hiding behind a bedroom door at his ex-partner's Corowa house.
His very presence meant he was in breach of an apprehended violence order.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Defence lawyer Laura Melhuish on Tuesday foreshadowed an application under Section 32 of the Mental Health Act to have Ray, 27, diverted to the care of mental health professionals.
Ms Melhuish initially told magistrate Rodney Brender in Albury Local Court that Ray did not wish to plead, but soon after entered a plea of guilty to contravene an apprehended violence order and use an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention.
The incident happened on August 19.
Police said Ray was holding a carving knife with a 15-centimetre blade.
They asked him to put the knife down, but Ray said he wouldn't go back to jail over a breach "and that he wanted police to shoot him".
The case was adjourned to October 16.
