Schools students have been "rescued" at Albury Airport following a plane crash training exercise.

The simulated crash, which involved 40 students, was a way for emergency service workers and airport staff to test their skills and how they work together.
Working on the theory an inbound passenger aircraft suffered a catastrophic wing failure before crashing next to the runway, Councillor Alice Glachan said about 80 people were involved in the exercise on Wednesday.

"We've got a very good safety track record, but it never hurts to practice," she said.
Police Acting Inspector Gary Lewis said emergency services had been called to the airport on September 24.
An inbound plane made an emergency landing after fumes were detected.
"It's vitally important for us to test our response to these incidents," he said.
Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Stewart Alexander said safety was the main priority.
The exercise ran for two hours and did not affect airport traffic.
