On Sunday, deputy Nationals leader and Wodonga-based senator Bridget McKenzie said she was delighted Deputy Prime Minister Michael McCormack approved funding of up to $10 million for Wodonga Council under the government's community development grants program.
Wodonga Council has been lobbying for the development of the sporting precinct for about a decade, but repeatedly were unable to secure state or federal funding.
The first stage of the project will include the construction of three soccer pitches, a pavilion, a football training oval and two netball courts.

Senator McKenzie said the Baranduda Fields development would cement Wodonga as a top 10 regional capital and cater for the region's continuing population growth.
"This project will mean Albury-Wodonga will have the best sporting facilities between Melbourne and Sydney," she said.
"Wodonga and the wider region will enjoy 21st century facilities, fit for purpose facilities, to stay healthy and active, and to deliver pathways for our young athletes.
"This project also recognises the fact that competitive sport is not for everyone so it will also include a raft of informal opportunities to keep active."
The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Cities and Regional Development, under Mr McCormack, will work with Wodonga Council to finalise the funding agreement and project timeline.
When the funding was first announced in April, Wodonga mayor Anna Speedie welcomed the commitment, and a council statement said the investment meant the project could break ground in 2019.
On Sunday, Cr Speedie said the project was an extremely exciting development for the fast-growing city.
"The council is thrilled to see the vision for Baranduda Fields become a reality after lobbying tirelessly for the project," she said.
"Detailed design for the initial infrastructure and pavilion are complete and we are well positioned to deliver this project."
Cr Speedie said tendering for the first stage would be undertaken in the new year.
"The initial works at Baranduda Fields will involve civil works and the bringing in of power, water and internal roads to service the site," she said.
