NSW Rural Fire Service said volunteer Samuel McPaul was involved in a freakish weather event with extreme strong winds lifting the 10 tonne fire truck off the ground, landing on its roof.
This trapped all three members of the crew and one sustained fatal injuries.
NSW Police said the RFS volunteer, believed to be aged 28, had been a passenger when the truck rolled on a property at River Road, Jingellic, about 5.50pm.
The truck had three men on board, with a second passenger, aged 39, airlifted to The Alfred Hospital in Melbourne in a serious condition suffering burns.
The driver, 52, was treated at the scene then taken to Holbrook hospital with minor injuries. He has since been released.
"It's believed the two passengers were firefighting from the refuge area behind the main cabin when the vehicle rolled," a police statement said.
Murray River Police District officers established a crime scene, which was examined by specialist forensic officers.
A report will be prepared for the coroner and inquiries continue.
NSW RFS Superintendent Patrick Westwood confirmed the fatality.
"I am sure that the community of the Southern Border team area will understand that we have support under way for the firefighter's family at present," he said.
NSW RFS Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons and the RFS Senior Chaplain Ian Spall joined Superintendent Westwood spending time overnight with Mr McPaul's family.
"As everyone would understand this is a very, very sad day for the NSW Rural Fire Service family locally and across the state," Superintendent Westwood said.
"Four of our firefighters have received burns and have been transported to Albury Base and major hospitals in Sydney and Melbourne for treatment and at least two of our appliances have been damaged on the fire ground."
The fire has crossed the Murray River and the RFS will be assisting the Country Fire Authority with the continuing firefight over the coming days.
MONDAY EVENING: A volunteer firefighter has been killed, two others burnt and a fourth firefighter injured while battling a fierce blaze in the Upper Murray.
A Rural Fire Service vehicle rolled when hit by extreme winds at the Green Valley bushfire, near Jingellic, on Monday.
One volunteer died at the scene and two others were burnt and transported to hospital.
A second vehicle working in the same area rolled, with the firefighter onboard injured and taken to hospital.
The RFS released a statement sending condolences.
"The service's thoughts are with all the firefighter's families, friends and fellow brigade members," a spokesman said.
There were limited details released, but SES volunteers could be seen attending the area on Monday afternoon.
Members of the public also took to social media to express sadness at the tragic event.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison tweeted about the "terrible news".
"These are testing times. We are so grateful for the courage and dedication of our firefighters," he said on Twitter.
Also on social media, NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian described the death as "heartbreaking".
"A brave firefighter has lost their life protecting the community east of Albury," she said.
The fire had started at Talmalmo, about 13 kilometres north west of Walwa, on Sunday.
It spread into Victoria yesterday and led to evacuation warnings for those in the region, including Walwa, Cudgewa, Guys Forest, Burrowye, Mount Alfred and Tintaldra.
Those in the area were urged to travel to Wodonga or Tallangatta, with those in Jingellic told by the RFS it was too late for them to leave.
Campers could be seen leaving as camp areas closed.
Some in Walwa were keeping a close watch on the incident during the day as the fire developed.
Walwa General Store employee Sarah Hamilton was waiting for updates earlier in the day.
"We're just waiting on calls and information," she said.
A man at the Walwa hotel said everyone in the area was "very alert".
"We'll just wait and see what we're going to do," he said.
Water bombers could be seen trying to douse the blaze with dozens of fire trucks deployed to the area.
A relief centre was opened at the Tallangatta Memorial Hall in Towong Street.
It was unclear if any homes or buildings were damaged, but firefighters were working late on Monday to protect them as the fire increased in intensity.
About 4500 hectares of land had been burnt out by 8pm, fuelled by strong winds and temperatures above 42 degrees.
EARLIER: A volunteer firefighter has died as crews battle a blaze east of Albury on Monday night.
The RFS confirmed the tragic news, saying another two firefighters have suffered burns as they fight the Green Valley fire, about 70km from the Twin Cities.
Details were limited early on Monday night, but it's believed their truck rolled when hit by extreme winds.
Another firefighter was injured when a second vehicle rolled while battling the same blaze.
They were also transported to hospital.
Residents at Burrowye, Cudgewa, Cudgewa North, Guys Forest, Mount Alfred, Pine Mountain, Tintaldra, Walwa were urged to evacuate about 7pm on Monday.
