Military helicopters airlifted 36 people from Omeo Recreation Centre and nearby Swifts Creek to safety late in the day.
The south-westerly change hadn't hit Albury-Wodonga surrounds at 4.30pm with the temperature peaking at 46.1 degrees at 2.43pm.
Fire has again impacted the Upper Murray communities including Towong, Tintaldra, Biggara, Lucyvale, Berringama and upper Nariel Valley.
The full extent of losses are expected to be revealed on Sunday.
Early reports are there is more farmland loss and likely stock losses, but homes and sheds have been saved.
Before today it was estimated 13,000 cattle and 5000 sheep had been lost due to the fires.
Communities including Tallangatta Valley, Bullioh, Dartmouth, Mitta, Bogong, Mount Beauty and Tawonga are on "watch and act" advice heading into the evening.
Evacuations have resulted in Harrietville and Bright essentially being ghost towns when in other years they would be bulging with holidaymakers.
The Bright Woolworths supermarket was closed at 4pm due to the fire threat.
The Hume Highway was cut at Euroa when a fresh fire broke out during the day.
The northbound lane was re-opened around 5pm, but detours via Euroa are still in place for southbound traffic.
