Twenty-year-old Ella Painting was killed when her car left Strontian Road near Boree Creek and hit a tree about 2.45pm on Sunday.
According to police, Ms Painting was driving her Toyota Corolla west along the road when she lost control on a right-hand bend and crashed into the tree.
The Charles Sturt University student was trapped in the vehicle for some time and died at the scene, despite paramedics' attempts to revive her. No one else was in the car at the time.
CSU vice-chancellor Professor Andrew Vann said the university was "devastated" to hear of Ms Painting's passing. "We extend our deepest sympathies to Ella's family and friends," Professor Vann said.
"We are ensuring our student community have the support they need during this sad time."
Professor Vann described Ms Painting's death as "a tragic start to the commencement of the university calendar for the Charles Sturt community" and urged students to "be safe and support your friends at this time".
