Coronavirus fear reaches the Border, toilet paper shortage

Supermarket shelves have been left bare by panic-buyers stock piling toilet paper over fears of running out.

Although the shortage is nowhere near as bad as metropolitan areas such as Melbourne and Sydney where shoppers have left some stores sold out completely, major supermarkets across Albury and Wodonga have felt the impacts of the nation-wide panic.

Coles Wodonga Plaza and Woolworths Wodonga still had some rolls left on Wednesday afternoon but the majority of shelves were empty, despite the government warning Australians to remain calm.

This comes as the tenth case of COVID-19 was announced in Victoria - there are 15 confirmed cases in NSW.

Woolworths said due to a "higher than usual demand" a four-pack limit would be in place both in-store and online.

"Woolworths has moved to apply a quantity limit on toilet paper packs to ensure more customers have access to these products," the company said in a statement.

Despite the toilet roll shortage, other staple items including bottled water, hand sanitiser and canned food remained well stocked on the Border.

While there are travel warnings for China, Iran, Italy and South Korea local travel agents said the majority of clients are just "hoping to get all the information" before travelling.

Albury Travel manager Jacqui Nelson said her staff have been "keeping on top of coronavirus updates" to pass on to clients.

"A lot of people are just confused about what they can and can't do," she said.

"We have had a lot of inquiries about certain places, and a few cancellations from people who have just decided they don't want to travel right now.

"But overall it hasn't had any negative impacts, we just have to stay across everything for our clients including airlines and other operators changing times and ports.

"I think we are in this for the long haul."
