Magistrate Richard Funston said James Roy Delphin's latest string of domestic violence-related offending gave him no choice but to impose such a sentence.
Delphin's previous convictions were for such incidents, he said, including assault occasioning actual bodily harm.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Defence lawyer Nico Rump said Delphin accepted responsibility for what happened.
"He knows it's serious," he said.
"He admits he has issues with aggression and his mental (health) regime."
Mr Funston agreed.
"He's certainly got an anger management issue, that's putting it lightly," he said.
"He just belts women. This is not just lightweight offending, this is really serious domestic violence.
"You can't just dismiss what's going on in the (police) facts sheets."
RELATED:
Delphin pleaded guilty to charges including assault occasioning actual bodily harm and contravention of an apprehended violence order.
The court heard previously that Delphin, 24, of Swan Street, and the victim had been in an 18-month relationship that ended six months before the incident on October 26.
That was when he entered the woman's North Albury home, in breach of the order.
She let him stay to keep the peace, then told him to "get out" the next day.
They argued, then Delphin bit her on the forearm before fleeing the house and jumping a couple of fences.
She went into the front yard to call the police.
When he returned soon after from a park across the road, they resumed their argument.
Delphin then grabbed her by the hair, picked up a large, heavy water meter cover and struck her on the top of her head.
Mr Rump said Delphin began using cannabis at the age of 11 and methamphetamine at 18. He was using "ice" heavily at the time of the assault.
Mr Funston set a non-parole period of 14 months, which with time already spent in custody will have him released on January 9, 2021.
