Diversions through Benalla have been put in place after the incident around 6am on Friday.
The Department of Transport said emergency services were directing traffic into Benalla via Benalla-Winton Road. Drivers can then take the Midland Highway and Dookie-Violet Town Road back to the Hume Freeway.
The closure is under the control of emergency services and the lanes will re-open once safe to do so. Northbound lanes remain open.
Drivers should allow an extra 30 minutes at least when using the diversion.
There was no information about any injuries suffered in the incident.
