John Elliott, who passed through the Border and North East in February and March, told The Border Mail he was "all OK" after Sunday's ordeal near Jamieson.
He thanked the Jamieson residents, Country Fire Authority, State Emergency Service and police for "their amazing work saving my team from such a terrible situation".
Victoria Police said the 38-year-old man, of no fixed place of address, was bushwalking with five camels and his dog near Ferguson Track about 3pm.
"Police have been told the camels lost their footing and fell down a steep embankment, pulling the man and his dog with them," a police spokeswoman said.
The man was uninjured and was able to contact emergency services.

Police officers from Search and Rescue, Mansfield and Woods Point, as well as the Country Fire Authority and State Emergency Service attended in order to facilitate the high angle rescue.
Policed said the man, his dog and all five camels were lifted to safety by about 7pm.
All were uninjured during the incident, which is still being investigated.
Originally from Perth, Mr Elliott is raising money and awareness for Beard Season, a skin cancer charity, and hopes to inspire others to live a bit more adventurously.
