The Halve Waste cloth nappy rebate has a budget of $10,000 to hand out to those who claim on the cost of reusable nappies.
For Thurgoona mother-of-two Sharlet Scammell, the benefits of making the switch more than 12 months ago have been both financial and environmental.
"I had a conversation with my sister who mentioned to me that she wanted to use cloth nappies with her next baby and my thoughts were 'that is disgusting' and 'why would anyone want to do that and give themselves more washing'," she said.
"So I then did some research to try to understand it better, and after discovering the environmental impact of disposable nappies such as, it takes over 500 years for disposable nappies to break down meaning the first disposable nappy ever made is still sitting in landfill, it was a no-brainer."
IN OTHER NEWS:
A Halve Waste spokeswoman said the rebate has already had 26 applications since launching on May 1.
"Halve Waste will provide a 50 per cent rebate on the cost of cloth nappies up to the value of $100 per household with each shire or council allocated an amount based on their population," she said.
"It is estimated that on average, a child will use 6000 disposable nappies by the time they are toilet trained.
"By using reusable cloth nappies, not only is less waste ending up in your kerbside general waste bin and ending up in landfill, families will also save money."
Mrs Scammell said the upfront cost can be a "burden" for a new family.
"My best advice would be to just buy a few, even one or two, and just get started," she said.
"Even if you use them once, that's one less disposable nappy in landfill and if everyone did that it would have a huge impact - it doesn't have to be all or nothing.
"I think the rebate is a fantastic initiative which I will be definitely taking advantage of.
"Building a cloth nappy stash can be a considerable outlay for a new family so anything that helps to ease that burden and get more babies in cloth is a really great thing.
"You can save around $2000 all up by making the switch."
