Support agencies can't go out into the community as usual, so the idea of a temporary number came about through conversations with Albury MP Justin Clancy.
It is being manned during normal business hours by Albury Council staff.
Catherine Byrne of Uniting Care Wodonga has gathered contact information for the council through the Albury Wodonga Emergency Relief Providers Network.
"If someone rings up and says they don't know where to get assistance, they can get a phone number for an agency," she said.
"We want people to know we are open - we are an essential service and we are there to help people."
The Westside Community Centre in Glenroy is among the many facilities continuing to provide support through COVID-19, that are on the contact list for the food relief line.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Before the pandemic, manager Tracy Zani was welcoming about 30 families every Wednesday who would receive a pack filled with goods from Albury Wodonga Regional FoodShare.
"At the same time we'd have a coffee and a catch up and talk to them about the other programs we ran," she said.
"We can't open the doors anymore, but people still need food, that hasn't changed and if anything, it's increasing."
Ms Zani, while still running case management from the centre, is instead bringing the food to families with the help of family and youth co-ordinator Stacey Franklin.
"We were very lucky to be the recipient of Nail Can Hill Run funding - we got a bus last year for our mentoring program, and we've been able to use it to get food to people," she said.
"Families can let us know when they're in need.
"We're also able to check on those who are vulnerable ... not everyone has family calling to make sure they are OK."
Mr Clancy was glad to see a temporary measure could be found in the phone number.
"We're extremely fortunate to have some great organisations such as Uniting Care, Foodshare and Carevan, and it's fantastic to see council on board," he said.
"My conversations with organisations such as FoodShare indicate that they've got the food there, but it's about making sure people know how to reach out.
"We also have the Albury Wodonga Volunteer Resource Bureau acting as a centralised source for people who can contribute and volunteer.
"It was wonderful to have this collaboration."
The Food Relief Phone number is (02) 6043 8515.
