The 36-year-old victim was left with fractured ribs, a collapsed lung, broken nose and cuts and bruises after he was attacked in the street on April 20 last year.
Ian Jackson, 30 - who was owed the debt by the victim - appeared in the County Court on Tuesday after pleading guilty to intentionally causing injury and attempted kidnapping.
The court heard mobile phone footage taken by a bystander showed Jackson chase the victim down the street and confront him, before the camera moved and showed two of his co-offenders punch and kick the victim.
The fourth man remained in the car.
They tried to drag the victim into the car, but he managed to get free and run away to call for help.
Judge Carolene Gwynn said the three attackers "bear equal criminal responsibility".
"(Jackson) has clearly roped in three other people," she said.
MORE NEWS FROM COURT:
Defence barrister Emmanuel Brennan said Jackson had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder from the abuse suffered as a child, including "floggings" at the hands of his step-father.
He said this trauma led to drug abuse, which then led to crime.
Judge Gwynn disagreed with Mr Brennan's submission that Jackson had good prospects for rehabilitation, based on his long criminal history and lack of compliance with family violence, bail and corrections orders.
"He's got to find a different way of dealing with life events that doesn't see him using drugs and beating up people," she said.
"The way to further the relationship with his children is to stop using drugs and stop getting into trouble."
One co-offender Avni Selman has been sentenced to 18 months in jail and Sedat Ciftci, who had limited involvement in the violence, was placed on a 20-month community corrections order.
Jackson's case was adjourned until September.
