A man has been arrested after trying to cross the Hume Highway checkpoint without a permit and failing to leave NSW.

Police turned the Western Australian man around about 9.30am on Tuesday, but he failed to take the route back to Victoria.
He was again directed to return to Wodonga but failed to do so and was arrested.
The 27-year-old was charged with failing to comply with a COVID-19 direction and will front Albury Local Court on September 28.

He finally returned to Victoria after being escorted by police.
A 28-year-old man was also fined $1000 after trying to pass through the Wodonga Place checkpoint early Tuesday morning with a permit in someone else's name.
Police spoke to the man and he admitted he had given them a false name and a permit belonging to someone else.
He was also found to have stolen goods and a knife.
