Scott Hartvigsen is among a number of community members who have noticed an increase in incidents in recent years.
"I've been in Beechworth for 20 years and watched things change over time," he said.
"You used to read the notices in the community gazette ... now it's cars and houses broken into, and things stolen constantly."
Mr Hartvigsen spent Friday night at a friend's place and received a call from a Wodonga police officer on Saturday.
"I got a phone call in the morning at 9am from a policeman saying 'did you have a car accident last night?' and I said 'no',' he said.
"He said, "well, your car is on its roof at the Gorge."
Detectives have fingerprinted the car and Mr Hartvigsen's home, which was broken into so that the perpetrators could gain his keys.

He is devastated, requiring the car to transport his family and for his work as a photographer.
Mr Hartvigsen believes as Beechworth has become more populated it has become a target.
"As towns grow, things change, let's all look out for each other," he said.
