In a deceptive finish Coin Drop appeared to have broken through for his first career win at Wagga with jockey Nick Souquet aboard.
Racecaller Anthony Manton shared the view of most punters when he declared the former Hong Kong galloper had just held off the late charge from Pouring Rain.
Thoroughbred Central host John Scorse was even confident enough to start conducting a post race interview with Wellington as the winning trainer.
Wellington, Souquet along with most punters were left gobsmacked when Pouring Rain was declared the winner.
Souquet was adamant he was first past the post and demanded from stewards that he was allowed to view the official photo finish.
The leading hoop was fined $400 on a misconduct charge for an outburst after viewing the photo finish.
Souquet will once again partner Coin Drop in the $22,000 Maiden Handicap, (1000m).
Wellington said he refused to dwell on the controversy surrounding Coin Drop's most recent start and was hoping the gelding could go one better on Thursday.
"There were quite a few people on course that thought we had won," Wellington said.
"But the photo showed otherwise and I'm not going to dispute it and I've moved on.
"I didn't get to speak to Nick after the race because of the restrictions.
"But he is drawn well today and has got the extra fitness under his belt which can only help him.
"I'm still getting to know the horse and am unsure if he is better suited to 1000m or 1200m.
"But on his last-start performance I expect him to be around the money once again."

Wellington was also upbeat about the chances of Nevada Dane who is set to contest the $22,000 Benchmark 66 Handicap, (1000m) with Souquet aboard.
Nevada Dane drops in grade after two recent runs at Moonee Valley and Randwick after resuming from a 12-week spell.
The seven-year-old has proved competitive in the city after running third at Moonee Valley first-up.
"Nevada Dane is coming off two really good runs this time in," he said.
"I thought he trialled well before that and it's never an issue when you get Souquet aboard one of your runners.
"The horse missed the start at Randwick so hopefully he can get out cleanly today which he usually does."
Wellington was also hopeful The View could improve on recent runs after drawing favourably in the $22,000 Class One and Maiden Hcp, (1600m).
