Former NSW RFS commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons was among a handful of people who paid tribute to fallen firefighter Samuel McPaul on the anniversary of his death on Wednesday.

RFS Deputy Commissioner Peter McKechnie and Southern Border Team Superintendent Pat Westwood and Mr Fitzsimmons met with Mr McPaul's wife Megan and their seven-month-old son Angus.
