In a statement on Wednesday, Northeast Health Wangaratta said the new guidelines were in line with state government instructions and included allowing just one visitor for patients in most instances.

This includes just one support person for mothers in the maternity ward.

"To help us keep our patients, carers, families and staff safe we are limiting visitors and people attending appointments at NHW in line with the Victorian Health Department directives," the statement said.

Patients admitted to the hospital wards can have just one visitor per session each day. NHW said some changes to the rules would be approved on a case-by-case basis and in certain circumstances.

"Exemptions to restrictions apply if supporting a patient that is under 18 years of age, is receiving end-of-life care or needs specific physical, cultural or spiritual care/support," the statement said.

Albury Wodonga Health updated its visitor policy on January 1.

Director pandemic response Leisa Bridges said since then visitors had accepted the restrictions at both hospital sites.

"Thankfully we have seen full cooperation, with visitors understanding that these measures have been put in pace to ensure the safety of our community, patients and hospital environment," she said. "We are aware that many locals have returned from interstate travel over the festive season, and urge anyone who has visited a designated red zone, exposure site, or area of concern to get tested immediately."

Both visitor policies are available on the hospital websites.
