The young Albury man was "heavily intoxicated" when he targeted the Dean Street store.
But he still had enough presence of mind, Albury Local Court has heard, to lean in and retrieve his missing footwear.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Given that Hunter, as he himself told police, had "nothing against the store," his offending will cost him greatly for something that never should have happened.
Firstly, the damage bill for the broken window at Take Shape was $1495, which - to his credit, magistrate Richard Funston said - he had since paid.
"It's pleasing to hear that the offender has paid that in full," Mr Funston said.
On top of that, Hunter has been placed on a 12-month conditional release order, having pleaded guilty this week to a single charge of destroy or damage property.
His previous good character, plus that early guilty plea, meant he escaped conviction for his actions back on November 12.
"He's lucky he didn't do very serious damage to himself," defence lawyer Mark Cronin said of Hunter, who was a "talented" musician.
Police told the court that CCTV cameras captured Hunter in Dean Street about 3.40am.
He crossed the road and approached the clothing store, using his right foot to smash the window.
"The accused lost his right shoe in the process as it fell into the store," police said.
"The accused then grabbed his shoe and ran away in a westerly direction along Dean Street while placing his hoodie over his head."
Several people identified Hunter after a screenshot of the CCTV footage was put on the Murray River Police District Facebook page.
