The brother of the prime suspect in the abduction, rape and murder of Bronwynne Richardson in 1973 has broken down and apologised at her inquest.
Counsel assisting Sally Dowling told Peter Newey that the trio were all dead and time was running out for him to reveal anything he knew.
Peter, who had earlier told the inquest it appeared his brother was involved, started crying.
"Sorry," he said.
"What are you sorry about?" Ms Dowling asked.
"Colin," Mr Newey replied.
"With what's happened ... I just, nup ... I couldn't believe it.
"I just don't believe that ... I'm sorry."
Ms Dowling told Mr Newey "this may be the last opportunity you have".
Mr Newey, who cried between long pauses as the late teenagers' family looked on, again said he was sorry.
"I'm sorry for my brother for what he done," he said.
Mr Newey accepted his brother was a physically and sexually violent man.
But he said despite having long held suspicions about his involvement, he never spoke to him about Ms Richardson.

A pub patron also recalled overhearing a man bragging about the abduction and murder of Bronwynne Richardson years after the incident.
The man said he had gone to the Boomerang Hotel in Lavington in the 1980s and heard a man, who he later identified as Kevin Newman, appearing to relive the incident as he spoke.
While the place the Corowa teenager's body was found has regularly been described as Horseshoe Lagoon, Detective Sergeant Steven Morgan said it was about 1.6 to 1.8 kilometres west in Splitters Creek.
He said it appeared the wider area, on Waterview Road, may have been known as Horseshoe Lagoon at the time and had significantly changed.
Findings will be handed down at a date to be set.
