Wagga police charge man over alleged pursuit, dangerous driving after hitting parked cars

Officers from the Riverina Police District were patrolling the Ashmont area on Thursday about 2.30pm when they came across a white Mitsubishi Lancer and the driver allegedly failed to stop for police.

Acting Sergeant and Supervisor for Riverina Highway Patrol Jamie Mooney said after police engaged in a pursuit, the driver allegedly fled along Ashmont Avenue before turning onto Chaston Street where the pursuit was terminated for safety reasons.

"The driver overtook a number of vehicles on Chaston Street, and there was oncoming traffic at the time," he said.

Other police in the area sighted the vehicle again a short time later on Edward Street and re-engaged in the pursuit, according to Acting Sergeant Mooney, before the car turned onto one-way Roma Street.

"Those police moved in behind the vehicle, and because the street is so narrow, it was unable to escape," he said.

"However, it did then allegedly mount the gutter and drive along the footpath, colliding with several parked cars and a tree.

"The vehicle came to a stop and the driver was arrested."

The driver, a 22-year-old male, was allegedly found to have a disqualified provisional licence, and was taken to hospital for mandatory blood and urine testing.

Acting Sergeant Mooney said he was later charged with police pursuit - fail to stop, drive while disqualified, dangerous driving and possess prohibited drugs.

"He was bail refused, due to appear in court in April," he said.

Inquiries are continuing, with the car believed to have been stolen.

"We are still trying to track down the registered owner of that vehicle, and are waiting on results from the blood and urine samples," Acting Sergeant Mooney said.
