Fire crews handed over the incident to police amid concern foul play was involved in the blaze.
Police examined the burnt home on Tuesday and confirmed the fire was started by an electrical fault.
EARLIER: A fire which badly damaged a home in Wangaratta is being treated as suspicious.
Police and firefighters were called to the Cribbes Road home about 9.40pm on Monday following a Triple-0 call.
A Fire Rescue Victoria spokeswoman said the house was fully alight when they arrived.

"Crews began an attack on the fire, and brought it under control 18 minutes after they first arrived on scene," the spokeswoman said.
"Firefighters believed the cause to be suspicious, and handed the scene over to police for further investigation."
Crews had searched the home but nobody was inside.
