Australia Post bans on perishable products rock food growers and buyers

Milawa Cheese Company was seeking alternative delivery services while Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory had failed to get clarification on banned foods.

The Essential Ingredient Albury co-owner Barry Young said many food and hospitality businesses were reliant on Australia Post for deliveries after pivoting operations online amid the global pandemic.

"It's difficult if you've got to send a gift hamper to a remote location, a courier is not going to cut it," he said.

"You might need to rely on two or three different couriers, which makes it very expensive."

Australian Senator for NSW Deborah O'Neill said that Wednesday marked 12 months since the Morrison government cut postal service in the southern Riverina.

"These changes saw mail delivery time-frames in places like Griffith, Leeton, Corowa and the Albury-Wodonga area blow out from as few as three business days to seven full days," she said.

"To add insult to injury, it was confirmed this week that Australia Post will end the delivery of perishable goods on 1 July, a decision that will hit many food growers in our region hard."
