Every day he has the perfect answer.
At 93 and 94 respectively the pair have perfected the art of marriage, recently celebrating their 75th anniversary.
To mark their matrimonial diamond jubilee they received a letter from the Prime Minister and even Queen Elizabeth II herself.
Mr Pretty said that a daily ritual the pair have had their entire marriage was still alive and well today.
"Every day she asks me, 'how much do you love me?' and I have to stretch my arms out as far as I can and say 'this much'," he said.
