Albury mechanic Peter Allen, of New Power Motors, closes business

Peter Allen, 56, started working at Albury's New Power Motors in 1989 and has been the owner for the past 18 years.

"While we're still fit and able and while mechanics are in great demand we decided it was time to change," he said.

"I'm going to just be an employee, doing the same thing, just not with the headaches and not here."

Mr Allen has leased the Macauley Street shed, with a new venture expected to open there in June.

Over 32 years the mechanic has married, raised two children and welcomed two grandchildren.

"I'm nearly a local," he joked.

He's also seen a big rise in the special tools, information and insurances required throughout the auto industry.

"It's nearly full-time just learning about all the makes and models," Mr Allen said.

"And then somewhere in it you've got to earn some money to pay for all these licences and bits and pieces."

Another challenge is a general shortage of mechanics.

"There's no kids coming through, we're normally flooded with kids wanting apprenticeships and things - I think I've had one this year," he said.

But Mr Allen admits to "very mixed" feelings on his last day at New Power Motors.

"On one side you think you're relieved, on the other side you think the social atmosphere here with the neighbours and everybody, I'm going to miss that, and the customers," he said.
