Luke Behrends scored the only goal against Cobram, a glancing header from Jarrod Anderson's cross but it was late heroics from Roberts which clinched the 1-0 win.
"Cobram had a few chances towards the end but Ian was pretty amazing in goal," Diamonds coach Daniel Griffin said. "A lot of the win is owed to him.
"It wasn't the best game we've played but with a younger group, it's important the guys learn sometimes you have to win ugly and we did that.
"Cobram kept coming at us, but for 70 minutes we were good value."
Albury United moved top with a stunning 6-1 win away to previous leaders Myrtleford, who had Jayden Vescio and Daniel Kioses sent off.
