Police flying overhead as man performed burnouts in Wodonga

Liam Regulski was performing burnouts at the McFarland Road roundabout about 11.15pm on December 9 last year, just as the helicopter was flying past.

It alerted police on the ground, who went to the area and saw smoke and could smell burning rubber.

Regulski was in an unregistered Ford Falcon with the wrong plates and was on the wrong side of the road, and the vehicle was impounded.

"The air wing just happened to be there," magistrate Peter Mithen summarised in Wodonga court on Tuesday.

"Bingo."

The 19-year-old was with a friend at the time but wasn't being egged on, telling the magistrate it was his idea.

"Well, there's no excuses but what I did was obviously against the law," he said.

He had to pay $1115 in impound costs.

Regulski was fined $750 and banned from getting a licence for two months.
