Supercars officials have been left to scramble for a new date to stage this year's Winton SuperSprint at Winton Motor Raceway after COVID-19 restrictions again wreaked havoc on the North East race meeting.
The event was initially scheduled for May 29 and 30 and was postponed to July 31 and August 1 after Victoria was plunged into a statewide lockdown, but on Thursday was postponed again.
Winton is in a different position to most other rounds on the calendar given it is run by Benalla Auto Club for Supercars and isn't considered one of the championship's marquee events.
Supercars has committed to push on with the Townsville 500 next Friday to Sunday, despite the Queensland city being included in a three-day lockdown, which could be extended on Friday.
A statement from Supercars on Thursday said tickets purchased for the event at Winton would remain valid, but a new date is yet to be confirmed.
"Supercars and the Benalla Auto Club can confirm the Winton SuperSprint proposed for July 31-August 1 will now be moved to a later date in the year," the statement said.
ALSO IN SPORT:
"Due to current and evolving COVID restrictions it has been determined that a different date will be more suitable for the event to optimise the experience for teams, campers, spectators and officials.
"All other events scheduled on the 2021 Repco Supercars Championship calendar will not be affected by the new date of the Winton SuperSprint."
Border-based Brad Jones Racing had been given no new information when contacted by The Border Mail on Thursday, but will wait for further direction from Supercars.
"Although upsetting, the health and wellbeing of our team, all staff and fans attending is priority," a BJR statement read.
The postponement has created a six-week gap between the Townsville 500 from July 9 to 11 and the Sydney SuperNight set for August 20 to 22.
Winton hasn't hosted a Supercars event since 2019, but hosted teams for pre-season testing earlier this year.
