The shield pays tribute to Wodonga Bears' first premiership captain-coach Hau Heta and Corowa Cougars' founding member Greg Provost.
Heta, the father of Ovens and Murray football stars, Hayden and Dean, was blown away to be recognised in this manner.
"I was surprised when Bill (Wodonga Storm president Bill Bell) told me. It's a massive honour to have your name up there and the trophy is passed around to whoever wins," Heta said.
Provost and Heta were Albury Blues teammates in the 1980s before going on to have decorated careers in the sport across the region.
The Corowa great helped start the club in 1986 and remains involved to this day.
ALSO IN SPORT:
"It's something for the clubs and it's really good to involve the young blokes," Provost said.
"It's another avenue for you to stand up and play for your club.
"I remember we played one game against each other in 1993 and Hau was in the front row and was headbutting like he was 20 years old (laughs)."
Corowa vice-president Daniel Webb said the shield will be up for grabs each year at the home game of the previous winner.
"In my opinion, we need to start giving stuff like this to people when they're still around, they can be part of it and be shown more appreciation in a way," he added.
