Albury-Wodonga Football Association president Mark Leman on plans for the rest of the season

There are six full rounds of the home-and-away season outstanding, plus the postponed game between Wangaratta and Twin City.

Uncertainty caused by COVID outbreaks has the region's sporting codes on alert, with Ovens and Murray chair David Sinclair this week admitting "we may have to go straight into the finals series."

But AWFA president Mark Leman remains hopeful the climax to the soccer season will still take place in September.

"We've made the decision to go week by week," he said.

"We've booked everybody in for a weekly Zoom meeting, if required, if any further lockdowns happen.

"Our objective at the moment is to play as much football as possible."

Leman explained the decision to cancel Sunday's round 17, rather than postpone and try to play the games midweek.

"There was a very good discussion among the club presidents and the executive and it was unanimous that we cancel the last two rounds," Leman said.

"It becomes more difficult (to play night matches) with only six or seven weeks to go.

"The risk of further lockdowns in the next six to eight weeks would also have an impact on trying to catch up those games.

"Plus, the weather we've had in the last few weeks has increased the wear and tear on grounds."

Round 18 is due to start on July 31 with Albury United hosting title rivals Wangaratta.
