Around noon on Saturday police were called to Kiewa Street following reports of people congregating.

Police spoke to two men, aged 51 and 53, and a 48-year-old woman, who allegedly informed officers they were protesting in contravention of the existing public health orders in the state including a statewide lockdown.

The group was arrested and taken to Albury police station.

Soon after, police were called to a park in Dean Street after receiving information there were further people gathering.

Two of the men, aged 30 and 31, allegedly ran from police when asked to stop and were arrested nearby and were also taken to Albury police station.

The five arrested were each charged with not comply with noticed direction.

The 30-year-old man was also charged with resist officer in execution of duty.

They were all granted conditional bail and are due to appear before Albury Local Court on October 11.

Murray River police district commander Superintendent Paul Smith urged the community to continue to comply with public health orders.

"Although the majority of people are doing the right thing, it is important that everyone maintains vigilance with the health orders to prevent COVID-19 from spreading into our community", he said.

"Now is not the time for complacency, please stay at home for the health and safety of everyone."
