Border businesses urge people to buy local for Father's Day

With statewide lockdowns effective in NSW and Victoria, hospitality businesses have already pivoted to different trading models where possible.

Albury cake shop Sweet Surrender is offering cake and chocolate gift baskets for delivery on Father's Day on Sunday, September 5.

Sweet Surrender co-owner Julie Myers said they opted to remain open during the lockdown, which came into effect in regional NSW on August 14.

Mrs Myers said they had pivoted to takeaway to offer their cakes, sweets, savoury options and coffee to Albury residents and surrounding businesses.

"People are much more aware of buying local now," she said.

"Only this week we had people come in who were supporting all of the local businesses around us, which were still able to trade by buying a couple of things from each."

Wodonga bakery Miss Naked Cakes will offer a Father's Day six-pack cupcake box, which will be available through IGA supermarkets on the border.

The six-packs will be available to pre-order for in-store collection on Friday, September 3.

"Keep up to date with what we're offering on our social media pages," a spokeswoman said.

The Snowy Valley's new spice blend and rub venture will offer something for the foodie dad.

The Khancoban Kitchen offers products such as Upper Murray Curry, Bogong Butter Chicken, Jindy Vindy, Tooma Tikka Masala and Bringenbrong Burgers.

Launched in November, there is a story behind every product.

Using natural spices and no preservatives, the products are available online or from Pickled Parrot Provedore (Khancoban) and Jack's Store (Corryong).

Located in premises formerly occupied by Geoffrey Michael Patissier, Sweet Surrender is a family-run affair with Mrs Myers and her daughter Barbara Glendenning doing the baking, son Adam front of house while Mrs Myers' husband Barry, son-in-law Mick Glendenning and daughter Susie also help out.

As for the dads on the Sweet Surrender team, it will be business as usual on Father's Day.

"They'll have the pleasure of working with us and delivering to the other dads on their special day!" Ms Myers said.

They will offer free delivery in Albury for a minimum spend of $30.

Delivery will be contactless in line with public health orders.
