The GV made the difficult decision after COVID forced a third of Shepparton's population to go into isolation as the city's cluster grew to 67 on Thursday.
The league has awarded its premierships to the ladder leaders in all grades of football and netball.
Echuca United is therefore the senior premiers in football.
Now while the O and M's centres, such as Albury and Wodonga, have no COVID cases, it will be interesting to see if the GV's decision influences its thinking.
The league received negative news on Thursday with the regional NSW lockdown extended to midnight, Friday, September 10.
The O and M has now turned its attention to the Victorian Government's call on whether its lockdown will end on Thursday, September 2.
"That's important because we need both sides of the border to give us some opportunity to resume," O and M general manager Craig Millar explained.
NSW-based outfits Albury and Corowa-Rutherglen are hopeful a finals series, in whatever form it takes, can still be held.
"We still want to get a result, our concern is our netbellers, they lost (the grand final) in 2019, they were shaping up pretty well last year and didn't get to play a game and this year they're sitting on top of the ladder with just the one loss, but it's not looking good," Corowa-Rutherglen president Stuart Lingham offered.
"We're not giving up hope until the last, but we recognise it becomes more difficult by the week."

The O and M can extend the season until October 3.
IN OTHER NEWS:
"It still gives us a bit of wiggle room, I think it's inevitable now it will be a modified series," Albury co-president Dom Star suggested.
