The project is for new infrastructure to be built on the east bank of the Kiewa River, downstream of the pondage spillway on Embankment Drive and construction of a weir, which is a popular spot for natives and tourists in the area.
A community representative group headed by Damian Heman and Sarah Gamble started a petition in August, which now has more than 1000 signatures opposed to the location of the water pumping station.
The group is not against the need for infrastructure to secure Mount Beauty's water supply until at least 2060, but would like to see alternate locations discussed.
North East Water prefers the location for uninterrupted water extraction as it sits below AGL's hydroelectricity operations and has guaranteed river flows.
North East Water will hold at least two online sessions for interested residents on Tuesday, October 12.
"We're really pleased to hear that two virtual community consultation sessions are planned for next week," Ms Gamble said.
"These sessions have been well communicated by North East Water.
"The petition clearly demonstrated that the proposed location for the works is not broadly welcomed by the community."
IN OTHER NEWS:
North East Water managing director Craig Heiner said the online approach was required due to rules on group gatherings.
"We would much prefer to meet people in person, but due to the pandemic restrictions on group gatherings, we have decided to go online", Mr Heiner said.
"People will have to register for their chosen session before the meetings, and there will be a cap on participant numbers (50 people) to give everyone an opportunity to have their say and ask questions.
"If demand is high and the sessions fill up, we will look at holding further online forums.
"For those who don't have internet access, our team is more than happy to discuss this project via phone."
Mr Heiner is aware some members of the Mount Beauty community have concerns about the project and North East Water wants to address any issues.
"As an additional opportunity to incorporate the town's values into the project, we will be organising a meeting with a group of key community representatives in person," he said.
"We're continuing to work closely with Alpine Shire and the local CFA to explore opportunities to help in the development of the Embankment Drive precinct."
People can register for the sessions (11am to 12.30pm and 6pm to 7.30pm) at www.newater.com.au/mtbeauty.
