Bronson Meehan was part of a large group of people involved in the fight that broke-out in Dean Street on the evening of October 2.

An Albury police officer suffered serious facial injuries when he was allegedly kicked by Wodonga man Jacob James Hamilton as he tried to arrest another man.

Meehan's offending was not connected to that specific alleged incident, but magistrate Miranda Moody said nonetheless he had committed what was a "pretty serious affray".

"Imagine being the public out and about ... having to witness that," she said.

Defence lawyer Mark Cronin said Meehan "was not initially involved" in the brawl that broke out in Dean Street.

Mr Cronin said one of Meehan's friends had been hit from behind, which led to him "taking after this group".

"Certainly my client concedes by going after the group he was looking for trouble, and he found it," he said.

Mr Cronin said Meehan now knew he should have "left it to police to deal with it" but also noted how his client how been fully cooperative with police on the night.

"It's been a salutary lesson for him, your honour."

Ms Moody said she acknowledged the 22-year-old had been cooperative and that "he's a man of good character, he has no (criminal) history whatsoever".

While he was also remorseful, Ms Moody said "what upsets me" is that the incident took place at the relatively early time of 8.30pm when many people were on the street.

"People get killed. One-punch manslaughter happens in those circumstances," she said.

Meehan pleaded guilty to a single charge of affray, with police withdrawing a charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was sitting at a table outside the Public House bar about 8.25pm when a large brawl broke out a short distance further up Dean Street.

While Meehan took no part in this brawl several of his friends did, including one man who suffered an injury to his face.

He became aware of what happened to his friend when that man walked back to Public House.

Meehan walked to the old court house, where the fight was occurring, arriving at 8.33pm.

He argued with and then punched another man, who grabbed Meehan's shirt as they exchanged punches and kicks.

One punch broke the other man's nose.

Ms Moody convicted Meehan and placed him on a 12-month community corrections order.
