Wodonga's Gateway Health Medical Practice named the best in Australia

On Monday, the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners named Gateway Health the Australia's 2021 Medical Practice of the Year. The medical practice also won the Victorian title in August.

Gateway Health business manager Joanne Zamperoni said she was a bit numb after the announcement.

"Everyone is excited, it's huge, it's absolutely huge to win such a prestigious award for a medical practice, especially in a rural or regional area," she said.

"It's overwhelming actually to think at this moment we are the best [in the country]."

Despite being announced as award winners, it was work as usual for staff on Monday, although they did celebrate with some cake.

Ms Zamperoni said the GPs, nurses and staff were passionate about their work.

"There's a genuine commitment of the team that all people, no matter their circumstances, should be able to access high quality health care," she said.

Mrs Zamperoni said the clinic offered a wide range of services including gender services, sexual health including HIV clinics, multicultural and refugee health services, chronic disease management and unplanned pregnancy counselling.

"Ours is the only local medical practice that operates within a community health service," she said.

"This means we offer a seamless connection to a broad range of community services through Gateway Health."

General manager of primary care Jonelle Hill-Uebergang said the team was entirely deserving of the award.

"I am delighted for and very proud of our team of GPs, nurses and support staff," she said.

"They are truly amazing and committed to delivering innovative solutions for complex health needs in our diverse local community."
