Fire Rescue Victoria and CFA responded to a grass fire started in a paddock off Vincent Road around 9.50pm.
The fire, which was reported to emergency services as illegal fireworks, was contained within 20 minutes.
Wangaratta police Sergeant Trevor Schultz said police did have a report of a fire in a paddock and people causing trouble, but could not confirm the cause.
"We had a report and attended, but we couldn't find anyone at that address," he said.
"There were two males seen running away.
"Anybody with knowledge of that incident should inform Wangaratta police.
"With Fire Rescue Victoria, we would urge people to mindful of fire restrictions during the high fire danger period and to report suspicious behaviour."
