In a little over a year after Cr Poulton was elected mayor of Wodonga, Cr King is now aiming to emulate him in Albury.
"Given the significant support for our ticket at the election, the ongoing feedback Steve and I have received from the community, and taking time to consider my position, I've put my hand up to be considered by my fellow councillors for the position of mayor," Cr King said.
Past mayors Stuart Baker and Alice Glachan previously said they will stand for mayor, although there is speculation the latter will not stand.
Councillor Darren Cameron said he would vote for Cr King on Monday night after having not been canvassed by Cr Baker.
"Stuart hasn't bothered to ring me, so I'll be voting for Kylie," Cr Cameron said.
"Kylie had the good manners to ring me and discuss it, so I'm happy to support her.
"I'm confident in her capacity to do the job well and I think it reflects the will of the people of Albury at the election - out with the old and in with the new."
Cr Cameron believes Cr Bowen will benefit from time as deputy mayor and expects him to be mayor "one day".
Cr Baker did not think "there would be much point in contacting" Cr Cameron.
Cr Baker and Cr Cameron have clashed over the need for a new indoor aquatic centre for Albury with the former strongly supporting it and the latter saying it was unaffordable.
Cr Baker, who has been in COVID contact isolation for most of the last week and did his council induction online, welcomed Cr King signalling her mayoral ambition.
"I think it will be awfully close and she might have the numbers," Cr Baker said.
When Cr Baker successfully stood for mayor in 2007 he was unopposed.
This time he will have the support of councillors Daryl Betteridge and Jess Kellahan.
IN OTHER NEWS:
Cr King has the backing of Cr Bowen, Cr Cameron and councillor David Thurley.
Cr Glachan said on Sunday she had not decided if she would nominate to be mayor or deputy and declined to say if she preferred Cr King or Cr Baker for the top job.
Cr Cameron said she had asked for his vote to be deputy mayor.
When the scenario of her touting for that role was put to her, Cr Glachan replied: "A number of us are talking to other councillors about all sorts of things."
The remaining councillor, Ashley Edwards, said that she would not finalise her choice for mayor until Monday night's meeting.
She will not follow her Greens predecessor Amanda Cohn and nominate for deputy mayor.
Cr Bowen in floating his desire to be deputy mayor said he was "excited about moving forward as a team and playing a supportive role in creating a great synergy among the councillors".
Cr King would become the fourth woman to be elected mayor of Albury, following Amanda Duncan Strelec, Patricia Gould and Cr Glachan.
However, she would be the first woman to be mayor in her debut year on council though not the first radio announcer to have the role simultaneously.
Cleaver Bunton, Albury's longest-serving civic leader, read the news on ABC radio while also being mayor.
