Wombats put up a fight, but United came away with a 2-1 win to go 11 points clear of nearest rival Norths.
In one of the fastest pressure games of the season, Wombats had a lot of the play and moved better as a side, but didn't execute as well as United, which proved to be the difference in the end.
Tim Smith and Henry Macqueen scored for United, while Josh MacVean found the back of the net for Wombats.
Norths moved to second with a 3-1 result against Magpies, with goals coming from Spitfires trio Jeremy Payne, Oscar Smart and Larry Simpson.
Another Spitfire, Joe Forster, got on the board for Magpies.
Wombats and Falcons played out a 0-0 draw.

Casey Hartley's goal was all that separated Falcons and Wodonga - the former prevailing 1-0.
The result keeps Falcons just two points behind Norths after seven rounds of competition.
