So close yet so far was the story for the Spitfires men against second-placed Wests, immediately after the women's game.
The home side went down 3-1, but had more than enough chances to win.
Wests hit the lead against the run of play, but the Spitfires levelled when Sam Quick belted a bouncing ball into the back of the net.
Two unlucky decisions didn't go the way of the hosts and Wests cashed in on both occasions.
The Spitfires continued to pepper the goals until the very end, but couldn't impact the 3-1 scoreline.
"We just need the results now. We've shown we can beat all the top teams, it's time to step up and do it," Spitfires co-coach Tony Donnolley said.
