NSW Police said the man, believed to be aged 50 and from Sydney's west, went under the water about 8pm and failed to resurface.
One of his friends tried to find him while another went for assistance.
The man's body was found by members of the Volunteer Rescue Association a short time later.
Police have been told the man was with five friends about 1.30pm when they entered the river and over a number of hours floated an estimated five kilometres from Federation Bridge to John Foord Bridge.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
