The violence inflicted by Daniel Thomas McKendrick was sharply criticised by Albury Local Court magistrate Richard Funston.
Mr Funston said McKendrick's problems with alcohol clearly had played a role in the incident at his home on September 27.

"It has to be seen by the courts as an extremely serious act. (McKendrick) said before that he wouldn't be here if he hadn't been drinking that night," he said.
McKendrick, 31, pleaded guilty to intentionally choke a person without consent, for which he was put on a 12-month intensive corrections order.
Mr Funston also ordered McKendrick to complete 100 hours of unpaid community work.
"I'm not going to lock you up today," he told McKendrick. "But it is a jail sentence. And I am going to give you that one chance to do it in the community.
"It has to be seen by the courts as an extremely serious act. You can get through this and make this a massive learning experience in your life."
Defence lawyer Angus Lingham said the offending was "clearly out of character".
The court was told how McKendrick and the victim were home that afternoon when his father, who had just returned from overseas, came around.
They all began drinking then the victim arranged to put McKendrick's two young children, from a previous relationship, to bed.
He and the victim began to argue then he accused of her being unfaithful and grabbed her phone to read through text messages.
She left and went into her bedroom, but McKendrick followed then launched his attack.
