"Our family directly has been affected by cancer, so I was more than happy to jump on board," she said.

"Like everybody else, we probably thought it would never happen to us, and it does."

Mrs Georgiou agreed at once to join Stars of the Border Dance for Cancer, with memories still fresh of her husband Nick's successful battle with liver and bowel cancer four years ago.

"It's something that's always in the back of your mind and you're always thinking about it," she said.

"Even though we're very lucky that we do have a cancer-free household now, it's something that you're always aware of. You just have to not think about it and just look to the future and look after yourself."

Being part of the NSW Cancer Council fundraiser, where Border identities raise money and learn a dance routine to be performed at a gala night on May 1, is another positive response.

"We've got two young kids and if this helps them never getting cancer, then I'm happy to do anything," she said.

Mrs Georgiou and her teacher Chay Styles are preparing a cabaret number and intend to make full use of all their rehearsal time.

"Train hard and hopefully be able to put on a really good show at the end of the time," she said.

Her fundraising has already exceeded $5000, helped by a successful Dirty Dancing movie night and an ongoing raffle of a new car sponsored by McRae Motors Wodonga.

Outside of Dance for Cancer, Mrs Georgiou has owned Albury beauty salon Fashion Fingers for 15 years.

"It's probably the most rewarding job because you're making women feel better about themselves every day, which is the best part of it," she said.

Colleagues have offered great support while her daughters Krystal, 10, and Tonie, 6, are also excited by the dance project.

"They think it's just the best thing in the world," she said.

"I had them packing bags a few weeks ago, we've had T-shirts made up for them with all of our sponsors on it, they love it."
