Peggy Mahy has led The Scots School Albury for more than six years, overseeing the introduction of the Life, Learning, Leading model and the launch of the International Baccalaureate primary years program in the junior school.
She will finish on July 3, with the school's recruitment process aiming to have a new principal in place for the start of the 2021 school year.
The Scots School Albury board chair Carolyn O'Dwyer thanked Ms Mahy for her dedication to the school and students.
"During Peggy's tenure, Scots has been a finalist in multiple categories at the Australian Education Awards," Dr O'Dwyer said.
"We are working with Peggy to organise a fitting farewell.
"Due to current coronavirus restrictions, the details are still being finalised."
Head of senior school Mark Geraets will continue as acting principal for the rest of the year.
Ms Mahy joined the Albury school in 2014 from Canberra, where she had been deputy principal at Radford College.
She became the last Scots leader to live in the former principal's residence on the corner of Young and Perry Streets, with the house now demolished as part of a wider development plan.
