The NSW Senior Golf Open, scheduled for October, has been rescheduled

The $120,000 NSW Senior Open, which boasted the 1991 British Open champion in its 2017 debut at the Thurgoona Country Club Resort, was due to start October 30.

But the most lucrative tournament on the Legends Tour, which also boasts some of the most recognisable names in the sport, including Peter Senior, will now be rescheduled for early 2021.

Officials say the threat posed by the coroanvirus left them with no choice.

"This is frustrating news to the fans of the sport in the Albury/Border region, (but) rest assured we are working closely with the PGA and the Liverpool Catholic Club (owners of Thurgoona) to ensure the tournament is back on the calendar as soon as possible," general manager of golf at Golf NSW Graeme Phillipson said.

Officials will reveal the tournament's new date in the near future.

The NSW Senior Open has quickly made its mark with hundreds of spectators following the final groups over its three-year history.

"It is an extremely popular event for fans and players, so we are looking forward to the tournament returning early next year," senior State manager of the PGA of Australia David Barker said.

"We will be working around several other events in the February-March window."

Sydneysider Grant Kenny won the inaugural 54-hole tournament and the first event of his career when he held off Australasian, European and Japanese Tour winner Senior in 2017.
