Loy was rushed to hospital on Tuesday after a horse reared and fell on him at Warwick Farm.
He was treated by paramedics at the scene before being transported to Liverpool Hospital for precautionary measures.
Scans revealed no fractures but his father, Norm, said he will spend the next three months recovering.
"I don't know the medical term but he ripped the muscle in his back that is attached to the spine," Norm said.
"So it looks like about three months out of the saddle.
"There is also a bit of internal bleeding.
"So he wasn't in a bad way but he wasn't in a good way either.
"He is in pretty good spirits and is just thankful that he was able to walk away from the accident.
"As we know it has happened to jockeys previously who haven't been as lucky."

Loy had been riding in solid form on the provincial circuit and landed a treble at Goulburn last month.
The timing of the accident couldn't be much worse with the spring carnival in full swing for the next month.
"It sounds like he will have to spend at least the next few days in hospital," Norm said.
"Then he has to do seven days quarantine.
"I don't think he will come home and is happy to stay in Sydney while he recovers.
"He has been riding in pretty good form and had a contract with Goldolphin to ride at the provincials.
"But short-term he has to concentrate on his rehabilitation."
