Former Kookaburra Kieran Govers has concerns about Olympics going ahead in 2021

Kieran Govers made a long-awaited return to the region to run clinics for players and coaches within Hockey Albury-Wodonga and he hopes it might help discover future Kookaburras and Hockeyroos.

"I really just want to reiterate the basic skills and just provide another voice," he said.

"Obviously kids get told one thing from a coach week in, week out, but I'll come down and say the same thing a different way and they might take it on board.

"I like to bring the fun factor into it as well.

"I also did a coach session to give some insight into my coaching philosophy."

Govers was a member of the bronze medal-winning Kookaburras team at the London 2012 Olympics, but has reservations about the Games going ahead in Tokyo later this year.

"It's not going to be a true Olympics," he said.

"I understand Tokyo is going to be out of pocket, but I think they should delete this Olympiad, push everything back four years and put them in 2024. Then you have Paris in 2028, Los Angeles in 2032 and Brisbane in 2036.

"By that time COVID will be gone.

"If they do it now there will be limited or no spectators and the boys haven't played an international match for over a year.

"It's a pretty bad preparation for the biggest tournament in hockey history.

"It has its pros and cons I guess. If it doesn't go ahead there's teams with older players that might miss out, but so be it."
