The Devils will go three points clear of Albury United if they win at home to Twin City, in a game postponed last month because of COVID restrictions in Victoria.
Few would bet against the hosts although the last meeting between the sides, just 11 days ago, suggests it might not be straightforward.
Twin City led three times at Kelly Park before Wangaratta struck in stoppage-time to snatch a 3-3 draw.
Wanderers also held United by the same scoreline recently and coach Shaun Wilhelm is looking for another big performance.
"Twin City's always been renowned for playing well against the top sides," he said.
"We just tend to struggle against sides we should be beating.
"We showed a bit of determination against United and it was the same against Wangaratta the other week.
"We played that United game where we drew 3-3, then we had a night game against Hotspurs and went down 2-0.
"You turn around and think if we put in three-quarters of the performance we did against United, we should win that game.
"We bounced back the following week against Wang, when we led three times, so we've got the ability to be up there but we need to start doing it a bit more consistently.
"After Wang, we play United again on Sunday and then we've got Myrtleford so it'll be a good test to actually see where we are."
Wangaratta hasn't lost a league game since round three and boasts the division's meanest defence but it's the other end of the pitch which concerns Wilhelm.
"The strength for them is definitely going forward and their midfield," he said.
"Their defence is a bit shaky and they have conceded goals but the thing is with Wang, when they're on, they're on - and so are we at certain times.
"It'll be whoever turns up on Wednesday night to play."

Both teams won comfortably at the weekend, Wangaratta seeing off St Pats 5-2 while Twin City disposed of Melrose 6-0.
"The boys are looking forward to it," Wilhelm said.
"Everyone's available so we should be able to put a full-strength side out.
"After the weekend's performance, it'll be tough to bring anybody else back into the side who didn't play."
Kick-off at South Wangaratta Reserve is at 8pm.
