In a shattering blow for the region following a $19.6 million redevelopment of the ground, the game's governing body has opted to play all matches in capital cities, with the exception of fixtures at Coffs Harbour, Launceston and the Gold Coast.

It is believed Cricket Australia was concerned Lavington hadn't hosted a first-class match since 2017.

"Council is disappointed to learn that our bid to host a Big Bash match at the Lavington Sports Ground was unsuccessful, largely due to broadcasting uncertainties," Albury Council mayor Kevin Mack said.

"However, we are pleased to note that both Cricket NSW and Cricket Australia remain keen to bring content to Lavington Sports Ground this season, with a view to hosting a future BBL game.

"We're also continuing to work with the Melbourne Stars and Sydney Thunder to host any warm-up games, COVID permitting."

Cricket Albury-Wodonga chairman Michael Erdeljac said he was disappointed to miss out on a match but upbeat about the future.

"Cricket Australia has supplied some guidelines to Cricket NSW, Albury City Council and Cricket Albury-Wodonga and those three entities have met and are working on those guidelines for the future so Cricket Australia can bring BBL to Albury-Wodonga for points on a yearly basis," he said.

NSW Acting Minister for Sport Geoff Lee said on his visit to the Border in January that the venue would welcome a BBL match in the 2021-22 season.

"The NSW government will provide $100,000 to Albury council to host a Big Bash League match in Albury," Mr Lee said.

"It's a fantastic announcement and we look forward to the summer of 2021-22 to hold that match right here (at Lavington Sportsground).

"It will be a great opportunity to bring people from across NSW and Australia and if not internationally when borders open to showcase the best of our regions."

Lavington Sports Ground hosted Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars for WBBL matches and BBL practice games in 2016 and 2017.
