On September 18, there's plans to drop 1000 golf balls from a helicopter down on Belvoir Park in the latest event to raise money for Rotary World Peace Bell Albury-Wodonga.
A combined Rotary effort driven by the Wodonga West club, the initiative aims to install a large Japanese bell at the park as a focal point to encourage peace.
In May an earlier fundraiser saw ride-on lawn mower races while a gala dinner planned last month had to be postponed for six months owing to COVID-19 pandemic uncertainty.
Rotary liaison officer Clive Faul said golf ball drop tickets cost $10, with the winner to collect $1000, second place $750 and third $250.
"We thought this would be a novel way of having people interested and making people aware of the peace bell being positioned here in Wodonga.
"And it's great to think that we've had support from both councils."
IN OTHER NEWS:
In June Wodonga Council adjusted its draft budget to include $30,000 to the Rotary Club of Wodonga West for the bell pagoda construction.
Wodonga's councillors supported the contribution in recognition of the work the Rotary club did in the community and the importance of the peace bell message.
Albury Council has also allocated $30,000 to the Rotary project.
Once installed, the peace bell would be a visual reminder available for the community and schools, to be rung on special occasions.
Mr Faul said peace represented more than the absence of world wars.
"It's peace in the home and peace in the school and more love and understanding for our fellow man," he said.
